The mining camp that developed was named Morenci, after a town in Michigan. Continuing the Michigan connection, The Detroit Copper Company was organized in Clifton/Morenci. Because of the terrain, the Lezinsky brothers developed a narrow gauge railroad and a long incline from the Longfellow mine down to the smelter.

Clifton's population ballooned from 600 in 1880 to 5000 by 1910, and it quickly earned its reputation as the wildest of the "Wild West" boomtowns. The Clifton-Morenci District had claims staked as early as 1872 by a group of men which included the Metcalf brothers. A town was named after the brothers which has since been overtaken by the mining production which continues to present day. Following the claims in Clifton-Morenci area were those in Globe established in 1874.

Clifton is actually a town that still has a pretty robust population for a ghost town. With a 2014 census of 3,626, Clifton residents have proved to be more resilient than most ghost towns. At its height in 1910, the population was at 5,000. What makes the town unique though is its jail built inside a solid granite cliff. See our trip report

Founded in 1993 as a natural resource company focused on silver, gold and lead production on its 12,400 acres, located on the Utah-Nevada border, Clifton Mining Company’s property contains both patented and lode claims, and the company has a 250 tons/day production mill facility The conflict with the Apaches lasted 26 years. Mining for gold and silver began in 1864, followed by copper in 1872. The booming mining town of Clifton was officially founded in 1873.
