A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a description of the work that will be done for a project. It’s a hierarchy of tasks that represents the project team’s understanding of the composition of work, and of the size, cost, and duration of each component or task.

The Gantt chart gives you a similar overview using graphical elements like lines and bars to show dependencies and lengths of tasks. The WBS is more data-driven, presenting a wide variety of task information in expandable rows. You can view the WBS on the planning console, or as a related list on the Project or Project Task form. Although Project adds WBS codes to tasks when the "Generate WBS code for new task" checkbox is turned on, sometimes you want to type WBS codes manually, and that can lead to duplicate WBS codes. The only time you might turn off the "Verify uniqueness of new WBS codes" checkbox is if you're planning to renumber tasks later and you get tired of the warnings Project displays. Modeler.Under WBS Modeler tab, click Import, select Populate the opened Project files.

The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) in any schedule is the framework on which the schedule is built, and it is the hierarchy of work that will be accomplished to complete the project. Creating a WBS structure in Primavera P6 is essential to the success of the project schedule’s makeup and organization.

However, the WBS renumber feature is greyed out in the Project drop-down. Renumbering subprojects that are inserted into a master project also changes the code that represents each subproject at the project level. To display WBS codes, you can add a WBS column to a sheet view. To change WBS codes after Project calculates them, on the Project menu, point to WBS, and then click Define Code.

If you did, check to make sure that you still have the defined code: Project –> WBS –> define code. If the code defination is missing, add it back in. Then go to Project –> WBS –> Renumber and select to renumber the project or a selected group of tasks.

Project does not automatically renumber the WBS codes, because you may be using those WBS codes in documents or other systems that are not linked to your Project file.
